2nd Place Halted By A Bog In Newton Abbot!
Mike and Scott competed on the Newton Abbot Audi Stages on 10th October. They were running at car number 4, which due to the 'reverse seeding' meant they were running near the back of the field.
The first 2 stages were the same stage run in both directions. They emerged from these 2 stages in 2nd place overall, a few seconds behind Peter Elkins. This was pretty much how things would stay for the next few batches of stages.
"The overnight rain had left the stages incredibly slippery in places and we were having lots of big sideways moments, which added to the enjoyment of the day" said Scott.
The pairing went into the penultimate stage still in 2nd place, with a clear lead to the crew in 3rd, but weren't very far off Elkins so decided to keep pushing in the hope of gaining the time and securing 1st. This wasn't to be however, as a very slippery 90 right caught them out. The car went just off line coming upto the corner and the wheels locked up; even when mike tried throttling to get grip again the wheels remained locked, such was the slippery nature of the road. They went wide of the corner and onto what looked like a patch of grass. When the car stopped and wouldn't move, it was obvious this was a very boggy grass area. About 10 spectators tried their best to push the car out but it was no good. This was the end of thier rally and any chances of a win.
The next rally is the Cambrian in North Wales on the 6th November. The car is having a WRC spec turbo fitted before this rally so it should be closer to the speed of the many WRC cars out. News of the Cambrian will be posted nearer the date.
